What we do The use of PDAs in teaching and learning is an emerging force which looks like reaching universal acceptance. (See). Check out the links on these pages for more information about the technology as its use increases. Please give all credit to the original authors. Also see
  • The first link on the right  - is to my own paper, delivered at ALT-C 2005.
  • The next is a link to John Whalley's 2001 paper debating the use of Laptops v PDAs

The Village e-Learning pages have been designed with the PDA user in mind, although not exclusively for them.  When you look at these pages via a PDA, the central area resizes to fit the screen.  Only if you want to follow the hyperlinks along the side do you have to scroll sideways.  The Blog page works even better because the only information in the side bar is a date. Pictures are generally small enough to fill a PDA page without hanging over the edge.

A total of 214 million text messages were sent on New Year's Day 2007. The figure for 2006  was a staggering 41.8 Billion. This figure is 44.5% higher than the figures for 2005 and confirms the upward growth of text as the major communication method for the UK’s youth. [source www.text.it January 2007]

BOOKS
Rheingold, H. (2002) Smart Mobs, the next social revolution, Perseus:Cambridge M,A.
a fascinating look at the changes being brought about in society by the use of mobile technologies. It also takes a frightening look at the (not too distant) future!
Kukulska-hulme, A. and Traxler, J. eds (2005) Mobile Learning, a handbook for educators and trainers. Routledge:London
a collection of essays which highlight various aspects of mobile learning in academia. I'm still reading this - but the essay by Jon Trinder, is a good place to start for those of you wanting to know more about the basics of mobile technologies.
